CENTRAL DISTRICT COURT RULES

If you do any filing with the Central (i.e., Los Angeles area) District Court, you probably should check out the recent rules, updated as of 1/1/08.

For example, when providing “courtesy” copies of Notice of Electronic Filing (NEF):

All courtesy copies must be blue-backed and, unless otherwise directed by the assigned Judge, use appropriate font size, page numbering, exhibit tabbing, etc. The last page of e-filing must include your e-mail notification from the Court that the document was e-filed and must also be consecutively numbered.

Before e-filing, check out the Court’s 37+-page Civil List of Events “cheat sheet,” which lists all the document titles, to determine in which category your document belongs.

The size limit for e-filed files must be less than 5,000 kilobytes. If your file is more than 5,000 kilobytes (check the size with the“Details” option in your File Open screen), then you must break it up into smaller files.

No Proofs of Service are required for e-filings, unless a pro se litigant is not registered with Central District Court, in which case personal service will be required.

Only the signer of the pleading can use his or her log-in and password for e-filing. In situations where there are pro hac vice attorney(s), and your attorney is local counsel, only your attorney’s password and login can be used.

An example of a signature block is:

JOKE OF THE WEEK

A couple of young boys were fishing at their special pond off the beaten track.

All of a sudden, the Game Warden jumped out of the bushes. Immediately, one of the boys threw his rod down and started running as fast as he could through the woods.

The Game Warden was hot on his heels. After about a half mile, the young man stopped and stooped over with his hands on his thighs to catch his breath, so the Game Warden finally caught up to him.

“Now, then, let’s see your fishin’ license, boy!” the Warden gasped.

With that, the boy pulled out his wallet and gave the Game Warden a valid fishing license.

“Boy,” said the Game Warden, “you must be about as dumb as a box of rocks! You don’t have to run from me if you have a valid license!”

“No, sir,” replied the boy, “but my buddy back there—he don’t have one.”
